Police issue warning as schoolgirl escapes abduction

Police in Castlereagh in east Belfast are warning parents and children to be vigilant after a man attempted to abduct a 13-year-old schoolgirl on Thursday, May 2.

A police spokesperson said that the teenager was making her way home from Newtownbreda High School shortly before 5pm when a man in a red Vauxhall Corsa attempted to drag her into the car at Forest Hill.

The girl screamed and managed break away from her assailant before raising the alarm.

Police said that they are looking for a man believed to be in his mid-20s with short brown hair with what is described as a cow’s lick.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Teenager Arrested After Murder In County Down
Police are treating the death of a man following an assault in County Down over the weekend as murder. The 32-year-old was attacked in Portaferry, shortly after midnight on Sunday. It is believed the victim was from Killyleagh. A 19-year-old has been arrested and taken to Musgrave police station in Belfast for questioning on suspicion of murder.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.
