Businessman jailed on 29 counts of fraud
Ballymena businessman George Millar has been jailed for two-and-a-half years on 29 counts of fraud.
The former financial agent for Allied Dunbar, aged 44, pleaded guilty to stealing over £400,000 of clients' money.
Judge David Smith said the law must discourage those who use dishonest means in connection with other people’s money.
He said he was satisfied there was a mixture of greed and ease of opportunity which presented itself to Millar.
However, sentencing Millar, the judge noted that the defendant had repaid all but one of his clients.
About £670,000 of Millar's own assets were frozen once his activities were uncovered.
Millar's defence counsel said: "He has lost his business, his marriage and his own sense of self-worth."
