Protests Held Over Job Losses
Workers protesting over 1,000 job losses in Northern Ireland are to hold a mass rally today.
The event is to highlight how manufacturing businesses in Northern Ireland lost 2% of its staff in just four days before Easter.
Almost 1,000 jobs went at aerospace company Bombardier while posts were also shed at car parts company Visteon, telecoms firm Nortel and engineer FG Wilson.
Speaking before the event, the Assistant General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Peter Bunting, said: "The recent job losses can be partly blamed on the global economic situation.
"But insult has been added to injury by the employment practices of some employers who have taken advantage of the weak employment rights legislation," he said, referring to the continuing sit-in protest by workers in west Belfast's doomed Visteon plant.
Mr Bunting said these would lead to further deprivation and hardship affecting families, local communities and small businesses supplying these companies.

Corus 'To Axe 366 Jobs'
Steelmaker Corus is believed to be axing 366 jobs at its Scunthorpe site in North East England. The company has said that it has "announced proposals to improve the competitiveness of its Scunthorpe site by aligning costs with anticipated steel demand". Consultations with employees and their representatives have begun on the site today.

Little Chef Staff Fear 600 Job Losses
A roadside restaurant has said that it will be closing 67 or its 161 sites resulting in up to 600 job losses. Little Chef have said the move will mean between 500 and 600 job losses and that the sites earmarked for closure have been performing unprofitably for a number of years.

Consultation On New Employment Programme Launched
Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry today launched a public consultation on a proposed new employment programme for Northern Ireland. The new programme, which has been called provisionally Steps 2 Success (NI), will replace the Department’s main adult return to work provision, Steps to Work, which was introduced in September 2008.

Fine Gael Clare Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Disability, Martin Conway, has said that National Job Shadow Day 2013 will help to eliminate barriers to employment for people with disabilities by promoting inclusion. Senator Conway is taking part in the initiative by welcoming a job seeker to Leinster House, who will shadow him for the day.
