Consignia chief executive could be replaced

The Financial Times has reported that Consignia chief executive John Roberts will step down from his post as soon as the government appoints a suitable successor.

Consignia – formerly known as the Post Office - is currently facing the dismantling of its monopoly along government lines aimed at opening up the postal sector to greater levels of competition.

In addition, the company's plan to cut costs through radically streamlining its operations have seen Consignia come under widespread criticism, most recently for the firm's decision to close a third of the urban post office network. Around 30,000 jobs have also been lost as part of the restructuring programme, representing 15% of the total workforce.

The inheritor of the title of Consignia chief executive therefore faces the task of turning a loss-making enterprise back into a national success story.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Labour MP Martin O'Neill, stressed the need for "entrepreneurial leadership" at the top of Consignia, as a counterpoint to the current chief executive's "civil service style approach".

Marisa Cassoni, group finance director of Britannic Assurance has already been tipped as the most likely successor to the post.
