Durkan welcomes redevelopment plans
Deputy First Minister Mark Durkin has described yesterday's announcement of a major range of financial measures aimed at boosting Northern Ireland's ailing infrastructure as "extremely significant."
The cash injection, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown during a flying visit to Northern Ireland, will see the creation of a new Strategic Investment Agency.
This agency will handle an immediate short-term package of £200 million, as well as oversee the transfer of Government assets such as the Maze Prison and Crumlin Road Prison to the Executive for redevelopment, in addition to several army bases in County Londonderry and the Belfast region.
Welcoming the move to transfer the bases, Mr Durkan said: "This is an idea I have been pursuing since the talks leading to the Agreement. I have no doubt that these properties can become a major economic regeneration force in our community.
"The SDLP has consistently campaigned for demilitarisation and the dismantling of military apparatus. The bases transferred – including Ebrington – can now be put to use for the maximum benefit of the entire community."
SDLP MLA for North Belfast Alban Maginness also praised the move to redevelop the properties, and welcomed the news that the Crumlin Road prison was to be transferred to the Executive.
He said he had no doubt that the people of north Belfast would be delighted that an institution which he said "symbolised conflict, despair and pain can now be used for the benefit of all the people."
