Antrim factory to axe 87 jobs
Around 87 jobs are to go with the closure of an American-owned car components factory in Antrim.
A spokesman for the Contex plant said it was no longer competitive. A statement by the company on Friday afternoon added: "The reason for this closure is that it is no longer economically viable. The business will close completely which will result in the redundancy of all employees, involving a total of 87 employees currently employed.
"Contex intends to phase out the operations at the plant in a structured manner and expects completion at the end of September, 2002."
UUP Assembly member David Burnside has said he plans to seek a meeting with Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Reg Empey to discuss the job losses.
Formed in 1999, Contex manufactures semiconductor die and diodes for the automotive market.
The firm is a wholly owned subsidiary of Transpo Electronics Inc based in Orlando, Florida.
