Teen Remanded On Pensioner Murder Charges
A 16-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, was today remanded in custody for a week on charges connected to a murder.
The court appearance followed the discovery of the body of 78-year-old Francis O'Neill, a former psychiatric nurse, in his home in Brook Valley on Saturday morning.
A detective told the court the investigation was at an early stage and ten witnesses have to be interviewed.
The defendant, who was originally detained on suspicion of burglary, but later re-arrested as part of the murder inquiry, spoke only to confirm his name.
He nodded when asked if he understood the charge against him.
The detective said he could connect the accused with the charge.
A 15-year-old male, also detained in Belfast over the killing of the former nurse, remains in police custody while another person questioned over the incidents at Mr O'Neill's house has been released without charge.
Detectives launched a murder inquiry into the pensioner's death following the results of a post-mortem examination.
His body was found by officers probing the burglary at the house in the quiet Brook Valley cul-de-sac at around 1.30am on Saturday.
Police have refused to release any further details about the nature of the dead man's injuries or the circumstances of the murder because of "investigative reasons".
