Minister opens NI Social Care Council premises
Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC), the new regulatory body for the social care workforce in Northern Ireland, has hosted the official opening of their new offices at Millennium House, Great Victoria Street, Belfast.
Performing the opening ceremony Health, Social Services and Public Safety Minister, Bairbre de Brun thanked all those involved in establishing the Council and said that the Council would lead the way on raising standards of practice in social care. Guests at the opening included staff, employers, education interests, service users, carers and government officers.
The premises have been designed specifically to meet the Council's needs and facilities include the Council suite which will be used for workshops and presentations as well as hosting the main Council meetings and hearings. Dr Jeremy Harbison, Chair of NISCC, said: "The Council has been established to implement the Government's commitment to raise the quality of social care services. Registering such a large and diverse workforce, as well as regulating and raising practice and training standards, is a challenge we look forward to meeting."
Currently there are over 30,000 people in Northern Ireland who work in social care, providing care and support for some of the most vulnerable in our society.
The Council was established in October 2001 to regulate standards of training and practice for the social care workforce.
