DETI committee to visit Belfast City Airport

The Committee for Enterprise, Trade and Investment from the Northern Ireland Assembly is set to visit Belfast City Airport on Wednesday May 8 at the request of airport director John Doran.

The Committee, chaired by Pat Doherty MP MLA, will tour the £21 million terminal and hear a presentation on current developments and future plans for the airport.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Doherty said: “Last autumn British Midland moved its operations to Belfast City airport. It was a strong vote of confidence by one of Europe’s leading airlines and strengthened Belfast City Airport’s position as a premier gateway to Northern Ireland.

"Written evidence submitted to the Committee’s forthcoming Tourism Inquiry highlighted the importance of access to Northern Ireland by air and the promotion and marketing of Northern Ireland as a Tourist destination."

Mr Doherty added that the airport had a role to play in the promotion of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination and that the committee would use the visit to seek the views of airport officials on how to promote and market Northern Ireland at airport terminals, through airline magazines and via airline website links.

The City airport provides a vital for business travellers throughout Northern Ireland with 1.7 million passengers passing through each year.
