Third successive night of violence in north Belfast
Several people have been injured in a third night of ongoing sectarian violence in north Belfast, the Police Service of Northern Ireland have said.
A man in his twenties was hit by a silver car, and a girl was reportedly taken to hospital with suspected broken legs after a metal trolley hit a group of people.
The incidents on Monday evening took place at Carlisle Circus when rival mobs hurled stones at each other. Police said at least eight shots were fired at police lines during the disturbances.
The latest violence came after a weekend of clashes that began on Saturday as Rangers beat Celtic in the Scottish cup final. Over the first two nights of violence 30 police and 10 civilians were injured.
The latest incidents included rioting in the North Queen Street area, the nearby Whitewell district and in the Ardoyne area, the scene of protests last year at Holy Cross primary school.
At their height the weekend rioting involved crowds of up to 1,000 people, as rival nationalists and loyalists attacked each other and the police, with axes, iron bars, baseball bats and breeze blocks.
Police said that they had fired 40 baton rounds and in follow-up operations a number of people had been identified and that arrests were imminent.
