Two Shot In Separate 'Punishment' Attacks

There have been further incidences of so-called paramilitary-style 'punishment' shootings.

Following an unconnected attack on Monday night on a convicted sex offender in Londonderry, four men entered a house in the Creggan Heights area of the city at approximately 10.30pm on Wednesday.

They shot their 26-year-old victim in both legs.

According to a police spokeswoman, they also fired a number of shots into the air while making their getaway.

Also, in west Belfast a 28-year-old man has been shot in both knees and in his ankle.

That attack also occurred on Wednesday when the victim, who was walking in Twinbrook, was bundled into a car by four men and taken to the Colinville area of the city.

The injuries of both men are believed not to be life threatening.

Police are appealing for information in connection with both incidents although dissident republicans are being blamed for the Londonderry attack.

A Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell has told the BBC: "I work in this area and I'm on the ground 24/7 and I can safely say 100 percent that there is no support for this type of action

"I would say to these dissidents now, you need to be reining your horns in," he said.
