Taxi Disruption Ends
Although expected disruption for air travellers has been avoided, hundreds of taxi drivers took part in a 24-hour protest yesterday.
A group called Taxi Drivers for Change organised the day of action, which saw services stopped from 4am on Monday morning.
Drivers are calling for the suspension of new licences and a review of the taxi industry. Pickets were placed at ranks across the country.
Taxi drivers in Waterford city, Cork, Galway and Dublin took part in the protest from noon until 3pm.
Meanwhile, around 20 taxis also took part in a four-hour work stoppage at Dublin Airport at the same time, although a threatened - separate - strike at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports on Thursday has since been called off.
SIPTU's representatives at the Dublin Airport Authority have decided to defer the threatened strike and have decided to attend conciliation talks at the Labour Relations Commission today instead.
