Belfast to Stranraer route to get £100m makeover

In a move that is likely to cost around £100 million, Stena Line are considering a reorganisation of ferry operations on the Belfast to Stranraer route.

The proposed changes, which include the relocation of the Belfast terminal downstream from the existing berths at Clarendon Quay, would reduce the company's HSS crossing times to 80 minutes, saving 30 minutes on the current journey.

The likely location for the new berthing area would be reclaimed land adjacent to the Victoria Terminal III freight facility.

In Scotland, the proposal is to move from Stranraer to a new facility at Old House Point, a couple of miles north of Cairnryan. Discussions are currently ongoing over improvements to the road network in Scotland which would be necessary for the proposals to get the go ahead. There also plans to increase the frequency of daily crossings as a result of the shortened journey time.

A meeting is to take place next week where the company will brief Regional Development Minister Peter Robinson on the current situation.

However, a spokesman for Stena said the plan for the new route was at an early stage, but it hoped to complete a feasibility study by the end of this year.

The company views the investment as a strategic move designed to secure the future of the route.
