Queen’s Ulster Unionists split with Trimble
The Queen’s University Unionist Association (QUUA) has severed its links with the Ulster Unionist Party.
In a statement on Wednesday, May 8, the QUUA accused Ulster Unionist party leader David Trimble of disregarding the views of a majority of unionists by continuing to share power with Sinn Féin.
In a statement the Association said it had been a difficult decision but felt that it had no choice but to sever their historic links with the party.
At the Association’s annual general meeting, the vote to end the link was “unanimous”, according to a statement.
The young unionist group said: “David Trimble has shown complete disregard for the views of the majority of unionists through his continued support for Sinn Fein/IRA remaining in government and through the continued flow of concessions to republicans.
"Our membership has suffered due to our links with the UUP and there is no longer any legitimate reason for us to remain a part of what is a farcical unionist party.”
Though this is not the first time the Association has been at odds with the leadership, the group have five votes in the Ulster Unionist Party’s ruling council, in a link with the party dating back more than 50 years.
