NI Executive decides on harbour land use
Harland & Wolff have convinced local Ministers to free up 80 acres of former shipbuilding land for a range of developments that will secure a more financially viable future for the company.
The H&W Heavy Engineering company within the Harland & Wolff Group waited four weeks for a decision that will free up land for new economic development including steel work, wind-turbine construction and oil-rig repairs.
Speaking following a meeting of the Executive on Friday May 10, Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment said: “The approval by the Executive to the release of 80 acres of land in Belfast Harbour Estate is a positive development and offers the opportunity for Harland & Wolff to move ahead with the implementation of its Business Plan for the shipyard.
“Much work remains to be done in reaching a satisfactory conclusion on the detailed land arrangements. If the Department for Regional Development reaches agreement on these issues there is potential for significant economic development on the vacated land.
“My Department will be working closely with the Department for Regional Development and other relevant Departments in monitoring the development of these proposals.”
At present, Harland & Wolff is currently finishing two roll-on roll-off ferries for the Ministry of Defence and while work is likely to last another nine months, the company's order books are bare there after.
Regional Development Minister, Peter Robinson said that details of the new lease for the land, and how it will be developed, would be resolved over the coming days.
