EasyJet doubles NI passenger numbers
The low cost no-frills airline easyJet has doubled its Northern Ireland passenger numbers in its financial half year 2002, in spite of the severe downturn in the aviation industry since September 11.
In the six months to March 31, 2002, easyJet carried 736,000 passengers to and from Northern Ireland, which is a staggering 110% up on the same period in the previous year.
The positive results make Northern Ireland now easyJet’s fourth largest sales region in Europe, with the Belfast routes contributing almost 20% of the airline's total 4.3 million passengers for the period.
EasyJet chief executive, Ray Webster is putting a high priority on the Northern Ireland market for further growth.
"Our passengers have pushed Northern Ireland to a great position of strength in our network and decision-making. We won't ignore that exceptional appetite for low fares."
According to sources within the company this is the first time in easyJet’s history that a profit has been reported for the first half which is traditionally loss making, due to the seasonality of the business.
An average of 77% of all seats on easyJet's Belfast routes were filled during the period.
The company has also reported that Northern Ireland continues to outperform the rest of Europe in terms of Internet sales.
In Northern Ireland 93% of all sales were taken over the Internet, compared with 90% network-wide.
