Woman and child rescued from blazing house

A woman and a child have been rescued from a burning house in County Londonderry.

The woman, who is in her 30s, and the six-year-old girl were trapped in a bedroom at their home in Florence Street in Rosemount when the fire broke out around 6.30am on Friday May 10.

They were rescued by fire fighters using breathing apparatus and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

It is uncertain how the fire started at this stage but the Fire Service said they sent out three fire engines to deal with the blaze.

Meanwhile a 31-year-old man has been shot in the leg after a paramilitary style shooting in the area of Belvoir Hospital on Thursday, May 9, 2002.

The man was walking in the Grays Park area when four men pulled him into the rear of a car shortly before 11pm. He was then taken to an area at the rear of Belvoir Park hospital on the Ballylesson Road where he was shot once.

Alliance Councillor for the area Sara Duncan condemned the shooting: "Those responsible for this attack have no respect for the law or the sanctity of a hospital.

"This is something the vast majority of people in the Belvoir area will find disturbing, and I implore the community to unite against terrorists taking the law into their own hands."
