Suspended Sentence For Cuckolded Knife Man

A Co Armagh man who stabbed his victim after walking in on him in bed with his ex-girlfriend has been spared jail by a Co Donegal judge.

Despite the seriousness of such a stabbing, Judge Gerard Griffin said there were "mitigating factors".

The lawyer for the defendant, Wilfie Milsop even told the court that if the trial had been in France his client would not have been convicted at all - rather he would have been "carried shoulder high from court".

Shortly after splitting from his partner, Milsop, 53, originally from Portadown and living in Killybegs, returned home from a pub to find his 'ex' in his bed with another man.

The court heard that Milsop ordered the pair out of his bedroom, but they ignored him and continued what they were doing.

Milsop then grabbed a knife and stabbed the man.

In a statement to the court, Milsop said although he and his ex-girlfriend split up shortly before the incident she was staying in a separate room in their apartment until she found a place of her own.

Milsop said he hadn't meant to hurt anybody, just scare them, but was enraged by what he saw.

Milsop was sentenced to 12 months in jail suspended for two years and ordered Milsop to donate €1,500 to the St Vincent De Paul Society.

Judge Griffin said a knife assault would normally carry a jail sentence but in this case there were mitigating factors.
