Empey praises province's tourism industry
Enterprise Minister Sir Reg Empey has praised the province's tourism sector, stating that people in Northern Ireland don’t have to go any further than their own shores to enjoy tourism at its best.
Sir Reg made his comments when he congratulated AA Landlady of the Year, Mary McFadden, who runs Drumkeerin Guesthouse in Cushendun. She has just returned from London where she was presented with the prestigious UK award, the first Northern Ireland landlady to win the title.
The Minister said that Northern Ireland had double reason to celebrate, as Geraldine Bailie, who runs Ballynester House on the shores of Strangford Lough, was named runner-up in the competition.
Sir Reg said: "To have the two top accolades coming to Northern Ireland speaks volumes for our industry and its future. All over Northern Ireland there are places to visit, sights to see and top class accommodation to enjoy.
"It’s time for local people to take a fresh look at what is on our doorstep and to get out and about over the next few months to enjoy our own countryside. Sample Northern Ireland’s hospitality and spread the word!"
The winners were chosen from 20 finalists selected from around 3,500 nominated landladies featured in the AA Bed and Breakfast Guide 2002. The selection process included written tests, overnight visits from an undercover judge and spoof telephone enquiries to assess each landlady’s hospitality and professionalism.
