Legal seminars tackle issue of pension rights

Consulting actuaries to the legal profession, Hazell Carr Collins, have set up a series of seminars for family law solicitors and barristers throughout Northern Ireland aimed at providing guidance on the complex issue of pension rights during divorce.

Pension rights are frequently the single biggest asset of a divorcing couple and require expert actuarial advice at all stages of the complex process of fairly determining the future pension rights of the couple.

The option of Pension Sharing, introduced by the Welfare Reform and Pensions (Northern Ireland) Order 1999, has been in force for over a year now, and is very important to many divorce cases. Even those clients who decide not to share their pension need to make decisions in an informed way.

"The objective of the seminars is to ensure that the 'end user' of the advice, the client, feels that advice is given clearly and understandably," commented Brian Spence of Hazell Carr Collins. "It is not a lecture on rules and regulations, but an intense study of how to identify the options available to clients and the problems and pitfalls advisors must be aware of."

The seminars will be held throughout the province during May, June and September, with events for solicitors in Londonderry, Portadown, Belfast, Ballymena and Omagh. There will be two seminars for barristers, both of which will be held in Belfast.
