Officially Opened Westlink Due 'To Close'
A multi-million pound improvement scheme to the M1/Westlink in Belfast, which officially opened today, will ensure shorter and more reliable journey times across the city.
That's according to the NI Roads Minister, Conor Murphy, who was speaking at the opening of the £104m upgrade, which has taken three years to complete.
However, the formal opening today is to be shortly followed by a 'closure' - as a sponsored run along the new road this Sunday is set to also mark the opening.
After the huge construction job was hailed a success today - including the building of two new underpasses and the widening the M1 between Stockman's Lane and Divis Street - the thoroughfare is to close this weekend.
The M1/Westlink will close for several hours for the 'Between the Bridges' Westlink 10k Run/5k Fun Run this Sunday.
It will be closed between Stockman's Lane and Clifton Street Junctions from 9am to 1pm on Sunday 8 March.
The charity fun run on the newly upgraded Westlink is to raise funds for the Northern Ireland Hospice - with even the NI Roads Minister, Conor Murphy back on the scene as he is also set to take part in the action.
After all the months and months of traffic cones during construction, the closure will see signed diversion routes back in operation again - but all in a good cause.
For Belfast-bound (M2 bound) traffic, the diversion route will be Stockman's Lane, Lisburn Road, Shaftesbury Square, Great Victoria Street, Millfield,Carrick Hill, Fredrick Street and York Street. For country-bound (M1 bound) traffic, the diversion route will be Clifton Street, Carrick Hill, Millfield, Great Victoria Street, Dublin Road, Shaftesbury Square, Malone Road, Balmoral Avenue and Stockman's Lane.
The country-bound carriageway will be reopened at approximately 11.30 am and the Belfast-bound carriageway will be reopened at approximately 1pm.
Drivers using the M1/Westlink should expect delays and should allow extra time for their journeys or use an alternative route.

Traffic chaos is set to ensue Belfast this coming week when DRD Roads Service begins resurfacing work in the Laganside area of the city. Waring Street, Albert Square and Donegall Quay will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday this week as part of the Laganside redevelopment scheme.
