Belfast Celebrates Cultural Lithuania
There's to be a Euopean celebration in Belfast next week.
The city will join Lithuanian officials to mark a special European allocade.
Lord Mayor, Councillor Tom Hartley will be at a special concert and reception organised by the Lithuanian Embassy to mark the country's capital Vilnius becoming European Capital of Culture 2009.
The Lord Mayor will be welcomed to the reception at Belfast Harbour Commissioners Office next Thursday by the Lithuanian Charge d'Affaires, Janė Hanel when one of the highlights of the evening will be a piano recital at the Barnett Room by celebrated Lithuanian pianist, Evelina Puzaitė.
Councillor Hartley said: "The year 2009 represents an outstanding opportunity for Lithuania's tourism and cultural development.
"Belfast too can share in these celebrations. We can share with the Lithuanian community in our city and further afield in marking this significant occasion."
Chargé d'Affairs of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to Northern Ireland Mrs Janė Hanel said: "There are important celebrations this year in Lithuania, which we would like to share with our community and friends of Lithuania in Northern Ireland, to bring closer both cultures and see how many things we have in common."
Belfast City Council has enjoyed a strong relationship with Lithuania for many years. It worked with Vilnius in the Connect Project funded by Peace II for example.
The aim of this project was to support links with other European regions to facilitate the exchange of best practice in economic, social and urban development as well as local governance.

47-Year-Old Extradited To Lithuania On Human Trafficking Charges
A 47-year-old man has been extradited to Lithuania from NI to stand trial for offences of human trafficking, drugs distribution and money laundering. The man was arrested in the west Belfast area in August 2020 by officers from the PSNI's Organised Crime Branch. He was arrested on foot of an extradition warrant issued by Lithuanian authorities.

Belfast Council hosts Lithuania business breakfast
Plans for a trade mission to Lithuania are now in the pipeline – thanks to a business event hosted by Belfast City Council. Local firms who attend the ‘Do Business with Lithuania’ breakfast at the Belfast City Hall expressed an interest in visiting contacts established through the venture.

Second Lithuanian denies murder charges
A second Lithuanian man has appeared in Banbridge Magistrates Court charged with two counts of murder. The court heard that when charged, 21-year-old Vitalijus Sedovas, said that there had been mistake and he was not guilty. Mr Sedovas was remanded in custody to appear at Newry Magistrate's Court on October 23.
