City Centre Sex Attack Probed

A young woman was the victim of a serious sexual assault overnight in Belfast city centre.

The incident occurred during the early hours of Friday morning in the Franklin Street area of the city.

It is believed that an 18-year-old woman was the alleged rape victim.

A 21-year-old man has since been arrested and is assisting police with their inquiries, a PSNI spokesman confirmed.

Meanwhile, the scene of the attack remained sealed off as officers examined the vicinity.

Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Franklin Street, Adelaide Street and Linen Hall Street areas at approximately 3.45am.

There have been a series of unrelated attacks in different parts of central Belfast.

According to the NI Rape Crisis Centre, last year in Northern Ireland there were over 380 reported rapes, but Centre staff are worried that more victims remain too frightened to report their attack to the police.
