Gardaí Chase Driver Admits Guilt Over Death

A jail sentence looks "likely" for a 19-year-old man from Londonderry who has admitted killing a man after he crashed while being chased by gardaí.

Thomas Long, 46, was knocked down as he worked at his fruit and vegetable stall near Bridgend in July 2007.

Paul Lynch, from Arranmore Avenue in Derry, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily injury to his passenger.

Today, Judge Desmond Marrinan told Lynch it was "highly likely" he would go to jail when he is sentenced in April.

A prosecution barrister said the incident began when Lynch swerved to avoid a Gardaí roadblock on the Donegal side of the border.

Judge Marrinan said the case was "a tragedy for everyone", and extended his sincere sympathies to the Long family.

The news comes just a day after a woman in her seventies was knocked down in a hit and run accident in the same area.

The accident happened on the main Clooney Road, close to the Drummond Hotel, Ballykelly yesterday.

The driver drove on after the incident, which happened around 11am and left the elderly woman with a broken arm and a punctured lung.

"The vehicle involved was travelling from the Limavady direction and pulled up a short distance from the scene, then drove on," said a PSNI spokesperson.

The vehicle is described as being a large silver 4x4, possibly a Land Rover Discovery.

Police want anyone who witnessed the accident or who knows anything to call them on 0845 600 8000.
