Retailing Jobs In Jeopardy
Retailing across Ireland is under pressure as the recession continues to tighten its grip on the economy.
It has emerged today that jobs may be lost amid renewed fears over the future of two shoe shop chains.
Creditors of the company that owns Barratts and Priceless Shoes have rejected administrators' proposals to have the company re-structured.
The stores' parent company, Stylo, has said no to a plan that would have closed 150 of its 400 UK stores, thus saving the majority of the 5,450 jobs across the UK.
In Northern Ireland, there are over 20 stores, employing almost 230 full and part time staff, so closure would be a huge blow to the economy.
However, all the shops continue to trade as normal while the administrators search for a buyer to safeguard as many jobs as possible.
Retailing problems are by no means limited to Northern Ireland with figures released today by the Convenience Store and Newsagent Association in the Irish republic making shock reading.
An average of 130 people in their industry are losing their jobs each week according to the organisation.
They said today that almost 50 newsagents are going out of business each month, with the report predicting that 600 more local shops will close their doors by the end of this year, with the loss of 7,000 jobs.
The organisation's Chief Executive, Vincent Jennings, said because the losses are staggered over time, people do not realise the scale of the problem.
