Derry Shooting Victim Named

The man who died after an overnight shooting in Londonderry has been named.

The 38-year-old victim was Jim McConnell.

He died early this morning in Altnagelvin hospital after two masked gunmen entered a house in the Woodland Avenue area of the city - just off the main road to Strabane - and fired several shots.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

A police spokeswoman said detectives believe the attackers left the scene in a light-coloured vehicle and drove off in the direction of cityside.

Police are keen to speak to witnesses or anyone who may have valuable information while the area around the normally quiet residential area, close to the Everglades Hotel, remains cordoned off.

The murder has been condemned by the Mayor of Derry, Councillor Gerard Diver: "It certainly looks like a particularly grotesque and brutal shooting by masked men, something that harks back to the worst days of the Troubles," he said.

"My reaction is one of complete horror, people will be shocked to the core about this," he said.
