Border Operation Uncovers 90,000 Litres Of Illegal Fuel

A cross-border operation has resulted in the seizure of around 90,000 litres of fuel this morning.

The joint operation between members of the Gardaí and the PSNI also involved the arrest of one man, and the impounding of a number of vehicles.

Customs officers in Cavan, Donegal and Louth seized one-third of the fuel during raids, while officers in the North seized more than 60,000 litres from retail outlets in Antrim, Armagh and Down.

Two UK-registered vehicles were impounded and a number of people are now being questioned.

Six adapted vehicles, a number of tanks, pumps and fuel pods were also seized during the operation.

A spokesman said cross border operations had been recently stepped up following the establishment of the Cross-Border Fuel Fraud Enforcement Group last year.

The initiative brings together the law enforcement agencies from both sides of the border to share intelligence and resources to maximise convictions and target individual cases.
