£17m Lost In NI Rates Blunder

Over £17m had been lost in rates revenue across Northern Ireland through non-collection.

It was revealed 30,000 homes listed as vacant, were in fact occupied and failed to contribute rates bills.

Local councils had commissioned LPS to investigate supposedly vacant properties, which shed light on the volume of the mistake.

Almost half of these premises - 13,000 - were in Belfast.

It has been reported that around of 6,500 of these homes are occupied, despite being listed as vacant.

It is believed the residents of these homes have not been billed for rates charges.

Belfast City Council could have lost £2m in lost revenue as a result of the mistake.

SDLP councillor Pat McCarthy said the council should be compensated for what his party described as the "incompetence" of those charged with collecting rates.
