Security Forces Defuse West Belfast Bombs
Three pipe bombs have been defused today after a major security alert in west Belfast ended.
The devices were recovered on Tuesday afternoon and while the area that was initially affected - between Broadway and Beechmount Avenue on the main Falls road is now open - Shields Street remains closed.
A separate operation, in Armagh, has also ended after a suspicious object found near the courthouse was declared a hoax.
Schools and businesses in the College Hill area of the city had been evacuated and motorists were diverted from the scene. The alert ended after a controlled explosion.
Sinn Féin Assembly Member Paul Maskey has since condemned the alert on the Falls Road.
"This morning's find shows a total disregard for the community of the Falls Road and their safety," he said, adding that the alerts had caused considerable disruption for people going to work and children going to school.
Last autumn, there was a series of alerts centred on a west Belfast school which repeatedly forced St Colm's High School in the Twinbrook estate to shut.
There were eight such alerts at the school over just three weeks prompting a local politican to intervene and call for a halt to the incidents.
