Concerns about HIV affect sexual lifestyle decisions

Nearly one fifth of adults in Northern Ireland have changed their sexual lifestyle or made decisions about sex because of concerns about catching HIV.

The latest figures taken from a survey of over 2,000 adults aged 16-44 have been published as part of the Department of Health’s Northern Ireland Health and Social Wellbeing Survey.

The sexual survey included a range of questions on contraception and sexual lifestyle and focuses on knowledge of sexual matters, first experience of sexual intercourse, contraception use and changes in sexual lifestyle due to concern over HIV and AIDS.

Two of the key findings are that nearly one fifth of men and 7% of women reported having had sexual intercourse before they were 16, and that 18% of men and 19% of women had changed their sexual lifestyle or made decisions about sex because of concerns about catching AIDS or HIV.

Half of the respondents who changed their sexual lifestyle had started using a condom, with 43% staying with just one partner and one quarter finding out more about a person before having sexual intercourse.

When asked how they learned about sexual matters both men and women said they learned most from friends of their own age with men topping the poll at 38%.

The survey found that 13% of respondents said there had been a time in their lives, lasting six months or longer, when they and their partner were trying to conceive without success. Nearly one in ten adults said that they or their partner had sought medical or professional help about infertility at some point in their lives.
