Neighbours Go Behind Bars

The austere surroundings of the now closed Crumlin Road gaol (pictured) will be the venue for an innovative community scheme next month.

Called 'Meet the Neighbours' it aims to bring together all communities in north Belfast in the unusual setting of the historic Victorian gaol.

The day is themed around building community cohesion and achieving better 'networking' across the area and is sponsored by Belfast City Council's Good Relations Unit and other groups.

It is being organised by the North Belfast Partnership, whose spokesman, John Read said: "The event will take place on Saturday 21st March from 9am-4pm with a wide range of over 40 information stands already confirmed.

"These include the SOS bus, the PSNI, NI Fire and Rescue and Belfast City Council with employability information and help for ethnic minority groups available."

Limited free tours of the gaol will also be available on the day, which is being organised to include a wide range of dance, music and a range of free food from across a wide range of cultures including Irish, Ulster-Scots, Chinese and Polish.

"Entry is free and is open to the general public to attend with access via the front entrance to the Gaol," John concluded.
