Over 320 Jobs Lost Every Day
Some 320 jobs are being lost in Ireland everyday, according to the latest figures.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment show that there has been a increase in job losses by 143% compared to last January.
The services industry is said to be the worst hit accounting for 32% of all redundancies in the Dublin area – representing a total of 2,088 jobs.
Speaking last week on the growing unemployment rate, Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said: "The scale of the adjustments now required represent a major political, economic and social challenge. Everybody will be affected and everybody will have to play their part in overcoming the challenge.
But today, the Government's tackling of the crisis has come under attack from Patricia Callan, Director of the Small Firms Association, who described the latest figures as "a damning indictment of the absence of Government policy in this area".
"If we are to stem this disastrous tide, then it is critical that the Government's Economic Renewal plan has tangible measures to support the business community in maintaining jobs," she said.
ISME, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprise Association, said that the figure was just the tip of the iceberg and that a further 100,000 redundancies were anticipated by the end of the year.
