Cross-Border Shoppers Are Patriotic, Says McGuinness

Martin McGuinness (pictured) has lambasted Irish politicians for branding southern shoppers travelling to Northern Ireland "unpatriotic".

Mr McGuinness spoke of the "evils" associated with racism, sectarianism and partitionism, in a strongly worded statement earlier today.

"I think it is very patriotic for anybody born on the island of Ireland to shop on the island of Ireland," said the Sinn Fein MP.

Mr McGuinness said there were a number of "tremendous evils in our society, one is racism, the other is sectarianism and I think an evil also is partitionism".

"What we need to recognise is that there is a free will of the people," he added

Stormont's Deputy First Minister made the comments prior to a North-South Ministerial Council meeting at Magee College in Londonderry.

The Council was set-up more than a decade ago to tackle mutual areas of interest on both sides of the border.
