Cross Border Trade Hits Superquinn Jobs
It has emerged that a leading Irish supermarket chain is to cut jobs by closing a store in the border town of Dundalk - blaming recent developments in cross-border trade.
As Superquinn prepared to cut back across the Irish Republic, with 77 jobs being lost as a direct result of the closure of the Co Louth outlet - it was also revealed that the move is part of an estimated move to shed 400 jobs overall.
At the same time as a report underlined the huge volume of trade flowing across the border to Northern Ireland in the pre-Christmas period, Superquinn Chairman Simon Burke said the company was left the company with "no alternative" but to cut back, including the shock closure of the border outlet.
The Superquinn boss said it hoped to avoid the closure of any more of its stores, but the Mandate trade union said it was "shocked and disappointed" by the announcement.
It followed soon after publication of a recent Experian Footfall Index which showed that there was a consistent increase in the number of people shopping in Northern Ireland in 2008, far more than in 2007.
The report said that the week commencing 22 December 2008 saw a 25.4% increase on the corresponding week in the previous year.
Superquinn said the company is to engage in a consultation process on how the restructuring plans will affect its workforce of about 3,300 people.

Superquinn Meet Union Over Store Closure
Over 100 Superquinn workers in the Naas store are due to meet trade union representatives at a meeting to discuss the looming store closure this morning. Union's called for the meeting yesterday after an announcement that the County Kildare store will close because its lease is due to expire on February 4th.

Jobs Lost As Lloyds Shut BoI
The Bank of Scotland is closing Bank of Scotland Ireland (BoSI), which has an office in Belfast as well as Dublin and will transfer its business to its parent company. Most of the 800 staff will transfer to this firm, however, there will be 35 compulsory redundancies in some areas.
