Bus Eireann Joins Dublin Bus In Lay Offs

Bus Eirean has announced plans to lay off around 320 workers as part of a major cost-cutting programme.

The transport firm also announced plans to take around 150 buses off the road as part of efforts to break even this year.

The move echoes that of Dublin Bus, who last week revealed plans to axe 290 jobs and reduce its fleet by 120 buses.

In a statement, the company said that it had expanded its network in recent years in line with growing demand, but there had been 'a significant drop' in demand for public transport last year.

Bus Eireann said this had hit its revenue, and cost-cutting measures were unavoidable. The company currently employs 2,700 people. It says the reduction in the bus fleet will lead to a phased re-organisation of its route network.

The provider revealed that passenger numbers fell by 4% last year and cited the fall in the number of people in work, a drop in the number of non-Irish nationals, a significant slowdown in retailing and a reduction in the number of tourists visiting the country as the reasons for the retraction in numbers.

The state-owned company has called trade union representatives into a meeting this morning to discuss the financial difficulties facing the company.
