Christmas Drink-Driver Numbers Fall

There has been a welcome today for PSNI figures which showed a 24% reduction in the number of people caught drink-driving over the Christmas period.

Northern Ireland Environment Minister Sammy Wilson today underlined the PSNI figures which showed there were 477 detections out of 5,500 road side tests over the festive period - 152 fewer than last year.

The Minister said: "The figures released today are encouraging. By carrying out increased road side testing over the festive period the PSNI had a very visible presence on our roads.

"These efforts, together with the heightened DOE radio, television and press campaigns, are having the desired effect," he said.

The DOE's Christmas advertising campaign focused on the devastating impact of collisions on families during the festive season.

Historically, December is a 'killer month' on Northern Ireland roads with an average of 20 people losing their lives at that time of year. In 2008, this figure reduced dramatically to six deaths.

Mr Wilson continued: "Although the number of road deaths is still unacceptable, it is encouraging that the message of 'Never Ever Drink & Drive' is getting across.

"However, I never fail to be shocked and disappointed that there are still those who continue to disregard the law and ignore their responsibilities to other road users," he concluded.
