T-Mobile set to become third largest UK operator

T-Mobile has said it is on course to overtake O2 in becoming the third largest mobile services operator in the UK during 2002.

T-Mobile said that Wednesday's publication of mmO2’s annual results demonstrated that O2 was losing the battle for profitable customers.

O2 reported that it had only gained 486,000 subscribers in 2001, giving it a total of 11,075,000. O2’s new customer figures are only a quarter of what T-Mobile gained in the same period, standing at 2,097,700 - a difference of 1.6 million new customers - bringing T-Mobile’s customer base up to 10,422,000 at the end of last year.

On top of that, T-Mobile added 328,000 customers in Q1 2002, a growth of 25%, compared to only 9,000 new customers for O2.

Harris Jones, Chief Executive Officer of T-Mobile UK, said: “Our investment programme over the past two years is paying dividends. T-Mobile is now a top-class network delivering relevant and exciting services that will make a real difference to how our customers live and work. On June 1st we will launch new services such as ‘Picture Messaging’ and associated price plans that will revolutionise the way the customer views their mobile service provider.

“The future of this industry lies with the truly-global operators, such as T-Mobile. These are the only companies with the resources to develop truly innovative products, and deliver them at the best prices."

T-Mobile (UK), was formerly known as One2One, and is the UK network of T-Mobile International – one of Deutsche Telekom AG’s four strategic divisions.
