£2m Upgrade At Lagan Weir
Belfast's Lagan Weir is to undergo a £2m refurbishment, almost 15 years after being first built.
The contract was awarded to local firm John Graham (Dromore) Ltd and work commenced this week.
Regeneration Minister Margaret Ritchie said: "This major refurbishment project will protect the Department’s investment in the weir which has been a catalyst for over £1bn investment along the riverfront. It has helped to transform this part of Belfast making it a focal point within the city.
"Furthermore this £2million project will have a positive impact on Northern Ireland’s construction industry and the wider economy. It is a very welcome shot in the arm for the industry at this difficult time."
The contract will involve the refurbishment of the weir’s hydraulic rams which control the massive 32 tonne fish belly gates that raise and lower to control the water levels upstream of the weir.
The project, which commenced this month, is due to finish August 2010.
