North West 200 Roars Into 2009
A top motorcycle road race has been hailed as a showcase for the best of what Northern Ireland has to offer.
NI Sports Minister Gregory Campbell said today that the North West 200 roadrace attracts riders and spectators from all over the world.
Speaking at the press launch for the 2009 NW200 in the Waterfront Hall, the minister said: "In addition to being one of Northern Ireland's largest sporting events, the North West 200 is also one of the fastest road races in the world and since its inception in 1929 the NW200 has helped to establish Northern Ireland as the road race capital of the world.
"This year will bring birthday celebrations for the North West 200 and at the grand age of 80 the race has more appeal than ever," he continued.
"The exciting course, situated in one of the most scenic parts of Northern Ireland, continues to attract participants and spectators from all over the world.
"I am pleased to say that my department is once again supporting the North West 200 and helping to deliver a first class race which is world famous," he said.
The North West race week generates over £7 million for Northern Ireland's economy and is said to perfectly demonstrate the huge benefits that major world class events can deliver.
The event raises the profile of Northern Ireland across the world through priceless media coverage that places international attention not just on the excitement and challenges that the race presents but also on the cultural, historic, natural and social attractions that Northern Ireland has to offer to visitors.
The Minister continued: "The NW200 attracts nearly 150,000 visitors, many from overseas, and this number continues to grow.
"Once visitors have experienced race week they often return to Northern Ireland time and time again."
Meanwhile, despite having a reduced launch - with no Stormont public stage - the World Rally Championship is also set to power into the province later this year attracting both a global TV audience and generate significant financial benefits to the Province.
