NI Road Deaths Down
Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has welcomed the fall in Northern Ireland road deaths recorded last year - but insisted more must be done to prevent fatalities.
In 2008, deaths on the province's roads dropped to their lowest level since records began, 80 years ago.
According to figures released by the Department of Environment, 106 people were killed in road incidents last year, which has prompted Mr Wilson to call for improvements in "education, engineering and enforcement initiatives" with other agencies.
"There are still too many people dying needlessly on our roads," the Minister said.
In 2004 government figures revealed 147 people had died on Northern Ireland's roads, in 2000 this number was 171.
Back in 1974 around 372 people were killed, with 114 deaths in 1931, when records were first compiled.
Minister Wilson said despite last year's figures showing signs of encouragement, there were "still a number of alarming trends".
"The number of child deaths has risen from five in 2007 to seven in 2008 and of those deaths, four were passengers," said Mr Wilson.
"I would, therefore, remind all parents to ensure their children are always safely secured while travelling, no matter how short the journey."
Last year saw a dramatic increase in the number of motorcyclist deaths, which rose to 25 compared to 15 in 2007.
Superintendent Roy Marshall said all road users "must accept their responsibility for their actions."
"Every single road user can take the simplest steps, which will dramatically reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads," said Superintendent Marshall.
"Slow down, pay greater attention and concentrate while driving or riding a motorbike.
"Always wear a seatbelt and never, ever drive or ride a motorbike after taking drink or drugs," he added.
