Trimble seeks new parades body
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has called for a new body to be set up to oversee the contentious issue of parades in Northern Ireland.
In a submission to Sir George Quigley, the chair of the Review of the Northern Ireland Parades Commission, the UUP leader claimed that the current system had failed in its remit.
Northern Ireland Secretary of State Dr John Reid appointed Sir George to review the work of the Parades Commission, which was set up in 1998 to adjudicate on whether or not contentious parades should be restricted or re-routed.
Following the submission of a 50-page report to the Review, Mr Trimble said that he was seeking more of a tribunal system that would be more judicial in its approach to the issue of parades. This, said Mr Trimble, would help to ensure that the rights of both side of the community were protected.
The UUP leader said that present system was flawed as it was based on public order considerations and consequently was weighted towards whoever could mount the biggest threat to public order.
The Orange Order, which has a policy of not recognising the Parade Commission, has welcomed the setting up of the review of the commission.
The Review of the Northern Ireland Parades Commission was initiated following protracted discussions held at Weston Park with a view to breaking the political deadlock in July of last year.
