Beached Ballycastle Dolphin Lost
Although concerned people fought hard to save the life of a dolphin washed up on the beach in Ballycastle yesterday, it ultimately proved impossible to help the disorientated mammal.
It was discovered stranded yesterday morning at around 10am and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency was called in to try and save what they had identified as a bottlenose dolphin.
Despite attempts to refloat it, the dolphin again stranded itself in the shallows.
A local vet was then called in to put the animal out of its distress and its body has been sent for autopsy.
Dolphins and their larger cousins, whales, have a tendency to strand, either through sickness or becoming disorientated in shallow water.
A local who helped said people were very upset they couldn't save the animal.
All attempts by the environment agency team - and their specialist knowledge about how to deal with these incidents - came to nothing as they tried to get the animal back into deep water five or six times.
But it was in some distress and couldn't make it back out to sea and kept coming back to shore, and had finally to be dealt with by euthanasia.

H&W Secures New Rig Project
Harland and Wolff has announced a new contract to carry out work on an oil rig. H&W will work with Aberdeen-based Dolphin Drilling Limited on the Byford Dolphin early this year. It follows the completion of its sister rig the Blackford Dolphin in 2014.

Hundreds Protest Against Animal Cruelty
A public rally has been held in Belfast city centre to protest against animal cruelty. The event, which took place on Sunday afternoon, saw hundreds of people attend. Many even brought their dogs and pets along.

Second Whale Dies On The North Coast
A second whale has died on the north coast after it became stranded in Portballintrae Bay, Co Antrim. The Department of the Environment had been helping the animal for 12 days. The young pilot whale is believed to have been between two to three months old and had been swimming in the White Bay Park for just over a week.

Whale stranded in Larne Harbour
A rescue operation is underway in County Antrim to save a minke whale which has become stranded on the coastline. The whale was spotted at around 7am yesterday stranded in shallow water close to Larne Harbour. Staff from the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have been at the scene trying to encourage the animal into deeper water.
