McAleese Visits Orange Hall
Irish Head of State Mary McAleese has made an official visit to a County Cavan Orange Hall today, in what one lodge leader has described as a "very significant" step.
The President toured Brakey Orange Hall, near Baillieborough, which was previously subjected to an arson attack. Two years after the hall reopened, Mrs McAleese met with local lodge members and the County Grand Master.
Henry Latimer, the incumbent County Grand Master, said he was delighted by the President's visit.
He said: "It's very significant in that it's probably the first time ever the head of state has come to an Orange hall."
During her visit to the area, Mrs McAleese also officially opened the Bailieborough Business Centre, visited the Bailieborough Arts and Cultural Centre, before being a guest of honour at a civic reception hosted by Cavan County Council.
After lunch she visited St Bricin's College in Belturbet and officially opened housing units for the elderly on behalf of Loch Gowna Housing and Community Development Associations.
