City Centre Traffic Discussed
Just a few weeks after the tragic death of a schoolgirl - knocked down by a bus in Royal Avenue - the Northern Ireland Roads Minister Conor Murphy has met with the Mayor of Belfast, Tom Hartley, to discuss traffic management in Belfast city centre.
Minister Murphy has also written to the Department for Social Development and the Department of the Environment Ministers inviting them to a meeting to discuss what action needs to be considered in the near future.
The Minister said: "I have been listening to the concerns raised by the public about traffic volumes in this area and I welcome the opportunity to discuss these issues with the Mayor of Belfast.
"I believe the best approach is a cross Departmental approach. I will take forward any issues from a roads and public transport perspective in co-operation with other Ministers who have responsibility for both road safety and the urban street design of Belfast City Centre.
"I welcome the opportunity to discuss this issue with the Mayor of Belfast," he said, noting that officials are continuing to liaise with Translink and the PSNI on this issue.
"Any proposals to reduce traffic in the city centre would require consultation with all the key stakeholders and a major traffic management project," he said.
As part of its 'Streets Ahead' project, the Department for Social Development and Roads Service are already working together to develop proposals that will amend the traffic arrangements in Belfast City Centre.
A planning application relating to Donegall Place and Castle Place has already been lodged with Planning Service.
Meanwhile, it has just been revealed that there will be free on-street parking in parts of Belfast City Centre - from 4.30pm - in the run up to Christmas.
Minister, Conor Murphy said: "This will be a welcome boost to shoppers and traders in the city centre and I hope it will help to ensure a successful Christmas."
Free parking will apply in the streets at the back of the City Hall, where on-street parking charges currently apply.
The streets will include all of those within the area bounded by Donegall Square South, Bedford Street, Ormeau Avenue and Alfred Street.
Andrew Irvine, Belfast City Centre Manager, said: "Providing free parking to city centre shoppers is one of a number of initiatives forming part of Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce's campaign to attract shoppers and visitors to the city centre in the run up to Christmas.
