Police warn of overseas fee fraud scheme
Police officers from the Economic Crime Bureau have searched a number of premises today after they issued a warning to local businesses to be on the look out for overseas companies searching for investment.
It follows claims that investors in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have been asked to contribute funds towards the closure of a $25million Nigerian petroleum deal, with the promise of a large financial return.
Police have said the sums involved in the investigation into the ‘advanced fee fraud’ are in the region of £4 million.
Officers investigating the alleged scam searched premises today in Armagh and Ballymena and enquiries are said to be ongoing.
Last year a man from Northern Ireland invested and lost £2 million in one such fraudulent scheme – the largest sum in the whole of the UK.
