Andor Technology selected as NI's top exporter
Andor Technology, a locally owned company based in West Belfast which manufactures scientific cameras, has been chosen as Northern Ireland’s top exporter in an event organised by Invest NI.
Prof. Fabian Monds, Invest NI Chairman, announced the choice of Andor Technology at the 10th annual Northern Ireland Exporter of the Year Awards 2001 gala dinner in the City Hall, Belfast last night.
The judges viewed Andor Technology was successful because it had achieved annual growth in exports of over 50% to high profile industrial and academic clients in markets from North America to Japan.
More than 250 business people from local companies, business bodies and councils attended the event, which is co-sponsored by the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry and British European.
Other awards announced last night were:
Leslie Morrison, Invest NI Chief Executive, said supporting the growth of export-led companies to increase overseas sales was a strategic priority for the organisation.
In addition to top awards a number of other companies received ‘Highly Commended’ certificates. These were:

- E-Business Exporter of the Year 2001: gem – the Global E-Mail Company Ltd, Belfast.
- Tradeable Services Exporter of the Year 2001: Northern Ireland Public Sector Enterprises (NI-CO), Belfast

Local recruitment agency ‘commended’ for excellence
Aptus Personnel, which has a branch in Pottingers Entry, Belfast, has taken the runner-up award in a prestigious industry scheme only after its first year of operation. The company was commended in the Best Temporary Recruitment Agency category of the ‘Professional Recruiter’ Awards for Excellence 2002.

IDA Ireland annual report reveals 2001 to be 'a tough year'
In its latest annual report, the investment and development agency IDA Ireland has said that last year was one of the toughest because of the downturn in global economies. In its report, the agency reported a net job loss in companies it supported of 4,000 during 2001.

Alliance & Leicester reveal lower profits for 2001
The Alliance & Leicester has unveiled lower profits, blaming higher investment costs. The UK banking group revealed on Friday February 22 that pre-tax profits for 2001 fell to £396 million, down from £447 million in the previous year.

Abbey National report fall in pre-tax profits for 2001
In line with analysts' expectations Abbey National has reported a two per cent fall in pre-tax profits to £1.94 billion for 2001. The company's profits were hit by a £256 million write-off in its business banking unit, due in part to Abbey National's previously announced £115 million exposure to the failed US energy trading giant Enron.
