East Belfast Rocked By Street Violence

Inter-factional violence broke out in east Belfast last night as crowds of loyalist and nationalist youths took to the streets.

The police have said that four of their officers were injured dealing with trouble between the rival groups, with up to 150 people involved at one stage.

The disturbances began at the bottom of the Newtownards Road at about 10pm and saw fireworks thrown at police and stones and other missiles being thrown at buildings, including those in the interface, St Matthews Court.

Two police vehicles were also damaged in the trouble

The injured officers did not require immediate hospital treatment, the police said.

However, officers had to block the main road and, with the help of community representatives, the situation was calm at about 11pm.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident last night a Linfield player was struck by a firework at the end of the County Antrim Shield final at Windsor Park in south Belfast.

Conor Hagan fell to the ground after being struck by the device seconds after the final whistle.
