Sir Reg puts the spotlight on Londonderry’s economy

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment was in the North West today to address the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce and Industry on a range of economic issues, including investment, tourism and energy.

Addressing the Chamber of Commerce Sir Reg Empey said: “One of Northern Ireland’s greatest selling points, is a workforce that is skilled, well-educated, adaptable, resilient and competitive and there is no shortage in this area.

“Londonderry’s wealth of talented people is reflected in the calibre of the job announcements that the City has attracted over the past twelve months. Developing a strong, vibrant and dynamic economy is something that the people of the North West so eagerly want and so richly deserve.”

Key developments in the area that were highlighted by the minister included the investment of software and e-commerce companies, both local and international, from companies such as Construct Build, to Northbrook Technology which are in the process of creating over 400 new jobs for the area.

The Minister also said that the City was prime tourist destination given its strong cultural and historical heritage and he spelt out his vision for the revitalisation of the Northern Ireland tourism industry.

He said: “Tourism in Northern Ireland is embarking on the most dynamic period in its history. Dividends from the peace process and the creation of new structural arrangements, will help the development and promotion of Northern Ireland as one of the world’s fastest growing tourism destinations.”

The Minister concluded his address by referring to the important role that energy has to play in supporting the creation of a modern economy and society.

Sir Reg said: “All of us want to see an energy solution that a modern society expects in terms of security of supply and fuel choice at affordable prices. We have set ourselves an objective of ensuring that Northern Ireland’s energy needs are met by a secure, diverse, competitive and efficient energy market.

“By creating the necessary competition and efficiency through legislation if necessary, will ensure the proper market conditions and structure to create a level playing field for new entrants to the energy sector, which will, in turn, create downward pressure on prices.”
