Two spectators killed as rally car leaves road

Two spectators were killed and another seriously injured when a car entered in the Donegal rally left the road.

Gardaí said that the accident took place this afternoon near Cloghan on the Balleybofey to Glenties road during a stage of the Shell International Rally, which got underway in Letterkenny earlier today.

The rally was halted after the second special stage and it is expected that the Donegal Motor Club, who organise the event would be issuing a statement later today.

The organisers cancelled the remaining stages pending an investigation into the incident and the cars were due to return to Letterkenny.

It is thought likely that the rally, which is part of the Toshiba Irish Tarmac Rally Championship may be cancelled.
