Tragic Newry Road Victim Named

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed a weekend accident in which a young child died to come forward.

The tragic incident took place shortly after 6pm on Saturday in the Co Down city of Newry.

Two-year-old Tatyana Jinga was taken to hospital after the accident on Hill Street, but died shortly afterwards.

Her family is originally from Zimbabwe, but now live in Belfast. The accident happened near Newry's markets on Hill Street.

A Zimbabwean cultural food demonstration had just taken place in the area and the street was very busy at the time when the two-year-old was struck by a van.

The BBC reported today that the child's mother, Tariro Jinga said: "All I want to say is I'll miss her, she was my first born I will always love her. All I want now is for her to rest in peace."

Her father, Thomas, said she "was a lovely girl, she was always happy".

Marriage increase in Northern Ireland
Latest figures have revealed that there has been an increase in the number of marriages in Northern Ireland. The number for 2006 was just 8,300, a small increase on the 8,100 marriages registered in 2005, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) said.
